Death Becomes Me

April 16th, 2009 | Comments | Posted in Melissa |

OMG. I just finished my first day in Level 2 of the 30 Day Shred. I am literally dripping with sweat.

First off, I want to ask those of you who are shredding… the last two days I have been having lower back pain and on the left side it goes down into my ass. Not my “soreness” from working my muscles. It feels like I have a pinched nerve or something. It sucks. And I am having issues with my right knee. Is anyone else experiencing these things??

Okay, about Level 2.

*Jillian, careful… your girls are about to fly out of your bra.

*It was awesome to have a change. 10 days of the same thing every day is boring. I don’t do well with boredom.

*I am not sure I was able to complete ANY exercise with doing ALL of the reps.

*I like this better than Level 1… so far.

*Holy plank moves. Killers.

*I hate lunges. Seriously. Hate. Them.

*I like the twisty jumps and skaters. They may be my favorite so far.

*The ab move holding the weights where you lift your legs can kiss my ass.

*The military press while kicking your legs out? Yeah, I do not have enough balance for that.

What does everyone else think? Have you moved on to Level 2 or are you going to hang around Level 1 a few more days?

So....due to a little mix up with Amazon and the United States Postal Service, I am sad to say I am only on Day 2 of Level 1 (but I did end up with an extra copy of Shred, which I donated to some friends who are now addicted!!) And Day 2 was way harder than Day 1 and I am so sore, but i LOVE IT!!!! Thanks for the motivation, keep it coming.

No worries, girl!!! Day 2 and 3 were the worst for me. Once you get to Day
4, it's so much better! I think it's great you ended up giving your extra
    copy to friends!

    Keep up the good work!

  • I'm just starting to shred today (I know, I'm behind) and all of these posts are scaring me! :-) Seriously though, I find all of the information that I'm getting from this blog and other blogs very motivating. Thanks!
  • I love this SO MUCH! First, it makes me very happy to see all you peeps Shredding! (Even though I'm not allowed to participate for the next few days. BOO!) Second, since I can't participate, I now know what to expect when I pick it back up!!
  • OMG!!! I just finished Day 11, Level 2 (day 1) and for a while there I thought maybe I would pass out and just fall on my face...I was in soooo much pain for some of those exercises, I don't see how I'll be able to progress beyond this level, but I'm gonna keep it up and pray that in 9 days I'll be able to do everything....I'm not nearly coordinated to do some of these exercises either! why does everything good have to be sooooo hard!!
  • shrinkingjeans
I bet by Day 20, you will be rockin' these moves! I felt utterly graceless today as well, but I know it will get better each day! ;o) -Melissa
  • I'm a little late on joining the shredding bandwagon. I just bought the DVD yesterday, and I just finished my second workout on the first level. After going to the gym 5x a week (3x a wk of strength training and 1 hour of cardio everyday), I was still afraid of Jillian! But I grinned through the entire workout. This is the first time I have been able to make it through a work out video. Don't get me wrong ... I'm sweaty and disgusting, was SO OUT OF BREATH and still had to stop a couple times (but only for five seconds, I promise!!). I absolutely love the challenge though. I'm looking forward to seeing how my progress goes, and sharing it with everyone. And I'm sure I'll be feeling this tomorrow, as I used 2lb weights tonight (none last night, just to see where I was at). It's the best!! :)

Good job Bobbi!! Glad you decided to hop in!
  • So glad you're joining us with Shredding! You may hurt tomorrow, but it will only make you want to do it more! It's the best soreness I've ever had! Totally addicting!!!
  • Level 2 was SO much harder -- couldn't complete a lot of the exercises, especially the ones in plank, but put in an honest effort at least. I'm sure it will get easier, or at least I hope so!
  • shrinkingjeans
It will get easier! Keep with it!
  • Just finished day 1 of Level 2 and I'm loving your post. Definately was ready for a change from Level 1, even though I work on the beginner level for the most part.
Love the twisty jumps and in time I will like the plank jacks- as soon as I can add the jack part. arg. Sweaty sweaty sweaty. Feels good. Although, we might need to reinforce the floor.
  • shrinkingjeans
Yeah, my plank jacks weren't so "jacky" either! ;o)
  • I just finished DAY 2, but give you a TON TON TON of credit for sticking with it!! I checked it out from the library so that if I didn't like it then I wouldn't be out the $9 or whatever it cost. So.....I like it so far. It's hard but your muscles hurt in a good way.

As for the actual pain that you are feeling, you might want to make sure your form is correct. Knees shouldn't go over your toe in lunges, back straight, those kinds of things. Good luck, I hope it gets better!!

Oh, and that pain in your low back and butt, yeah, that's probably a touch of sciatica like Christy said. Part of what may help is increasing your core strength (aka those crappy plank moves all through Level 2!).

Another suggestion: While laying on your back, take your hands and put them around your left knee and pull it up toward your right shoulder. You may have a tight muscle in your butt (the piriformis muscle) that is pinching down on your sciatic nerve.

How do I know this? I'm a physical therapist. Happy to help if I can!
  • shrinkingjeans
Thanks!! You know, that is probably it -the day when it started really bothering me is the same day the lower sides of my butt were SCREAMING at me. :o)
  • Thanks for the information, Saj! I had issues with my sciatic nerve while pregnant and thought that's what it sounded like. Great to know there is a way for Melissa to possibly relieve the pain!

    You're the best!!
  • Saj
I'm also a fan of Level 2. It's nice to have a change.

But I'm definitely sweating a lot more, which makes me feel like I'm really getting a workout. Not that I need sweat to tell me that. I'm EXHAUSTED at the end of that workout! And my arms are screaming at me! Don't you think they could have spread out the plank moves over the three levels?

I like your observation on Jillian. I totally agree! And she picks on Natalie an awful lot this time, no?

But I'm still loving this challenge. It's a great motivator! Thanks!!!
  • shrinkingjeans
I know!! There are SO MANY plank moves! But just think of what our shoulders will look like by the end of this! ;o) -Melissa

I have three words for you.

    Sweaty. Breatheless. Love.

Today, day 11, day 1 of phase 2, is the FIRST day that I feel like I got a GREAT workout. I feel so energized that I could probably do the workout all over again. I am pumped up! Yeah, I am sweaty and breathy right now but I feel AWESOME.

Now this, THIS is my kind of workout.

And no, I couldn't complete any of the circuits BUT the sweatier I got, the harder I wanted to try. Weird, huh?

    Love, love, love Jillian.
  • I totally agree with Lisa. I love level 2! The last three days of level 1 were hard for me because my knees were killing me. I wasn't sore anymore- it felt like I had injured them and it was hard to even walk- but I was pushing through the workout and I wasn't sure if it was smart but I really didn't want to give up. I was scared this morning to do level 2 because I thought my knees were going to hurt so bad, but this workout for whatever reason was much easier on my knees and I'm doing a lot better.

I had so much fun doing this that I actually pushed myself harder and really wanted to keep going. When it ended I was surprised at how short I felt it was. THAT was awesome, because I didn't have to sit on my couch for a half hour and recover. I actually had to be somewhere, and get me and my 16 month old out the door as soon as my workout ended. I had a moment where I was so weak putting on my makeup that I could barely lift my blush brush, but I did it- and got some food in me (I don't eat before I work out so I was pretty weak) and I feel great now!

    Yay!
  • shrinkingjeans
Yes, my knee was killing me too! Were you doing the modified push-ups? I was thinking maybe it was from that partly.

    Great job, girl!
  • It was hard! and I loved it!

  • p.s. That pain you're describing sounds like sciatica. You may have pinched your sciatic nerve maybe. I'm not sure what you do about it, but I know it can be painful.
  • I sweaty effin' mess. So sweaty. So shaky. My shoulders and ass hurt so bad. I don't think I was able to complete or master any of the strength moves. I can't tell you how many times I lost my balance and almost fell over. I was pleased to see that the tough chic (is it Valerie) almost fell over several times too! She's in shape and she can't keep her balance :)

I also love the twisty jumps and the skater move! AWESOME! Hate those plank jacks with every fiber of my being though. My tile floors are too slick and I my feet kept sliding back. I need to figure out how to remedy that. I tried using my mat, but it's not wide enough. If anyone has any suggestions, I'll take them!
  • I'm still thinking on how to fix your sliding problem!! But I am way jealous you have tile floors. Just sayin'. ;o)
  • Lisa_ShrinkingJeans
For the balance stuff, I turn AWAY from the TV and focus on something, anything. I squeeze my core muscles tight to keep my balance.
