Finale:: Down & Dirty

Well, August is dead and gone. I am down a total of 0.2 lbs from when we started this 30-day challenge. That’s pretty much a sneeze.

BUT, I will say that as of last week, my head has been back in the game and I have started to go back to the gym and get in the habit of regularly exercising again. Since Friday morning, I have logged about 11 miles and 3 hours of muscle work! That’s quite a bit!

I gained two pounds this week, but throughout my history, whenever I begin picking up the exercise, I always gain. Always. It will start coming back off next week. I’m not worried.

Did I mention that I am really sore? Yup. I sure am.

Dear beloved, underused, abused Sportcraft treadmill,

You have been in my life for three-quarters of a decade. You patiently waited for me each and every day in the chilled and gloomy basement. Sometimes I would visit you, but more often not. You made move after move with me… North Dakota, Colorado, and then North Dakota once again. You have withstood the pounding of my children’s feet, of mine, and even my husband’s as he proved again and again that he will always be faster than me.

I had to bribe my husband to buy you for me, but thankfully he has a kind, forgiving heart because I rarely, if ever, followed through on my end of the bargain.

I love that you decided to go out as fiesty as ever. You caught me totally off-guard as I was taking a walking break (3.7 mph). What a sense of humor you had — haha, LOOK! She has to run at a full-out sprint just to keep up with me — TRICKY. I’m pretty sure that was no 3.7 mph. I think you did yourself in, though, judging by that burning smell you let out. And the grand finale? Just shutting off in the middle of my workout? I am guessing you wanted to go out with a bang? You will be missed during these harsh, long, North Dakota winters.

Treadmill is survived by my own two feet, in a pair of New Balance shoes.

Melissa’s Weigh-In:: Men Beware

I really, really wanted to call this post Melissa’s Weigh-In:: The Vaginalogue. It makes me giggle.

So, it’s no big surprise that I have been in a slumpish funk lately. My husband lost his job two months ago, I have been struggling with awful knee pain, yadda, yadda…

I have been also having some womanly problems <——- men, you may want to stop here. Just sayin’. I have awful, heavy periods, complete with huge clots, but typically they last no longer than 7 days. Well, last month, it was 10, this month 12… This has never happened in my life. Since my last period ended last week, I have been horribly crampy and my boobs just hurt. I got in to see a doc for a Pap right away (it’s been 4 years, bad, I know). I had an ultrasound and have a 5-cm cyst on my ovary. I’m going to wait 6 weeks and have another ultrasound to see what it’s doing. In the meantime, I will probably start taking birth control of some sort to regulate the hormones, I’m thinking the NuvaRing. Does anyone use this?

I’m glad it’s just a cyst… I have both ovarian cancer and breast cancer in my close relatives, so I know that the gene is in my family. I am lucky to just have this minor problem to deal with!

The hubby left for work today, WOO-HOO for the new job, BOO-HOO that he will be gone for a long time. It will be a much farther drive than before, also.

The kids are going back to school next week, and I plan on refocusing my mind on my fitness and well-being.

Now, on to the weigh-in…

Down 1/2 pound this week! I’ll take it.

True Confessions of Melissa…

Shoot. Is it really confession time again?

I’m struggling.

Still.

My husband has been out of work for over a month now and ohmygoodness we are not meant to spend every day, all day together. We just aren’t. We have been doing the independent thing (he works so many days on out-of-town, then gets so many off) for the past 10 years and are accustomed to doing our own thing. I have been spending most of my days trying not to stab him with a fork, and I’m sure he will say the same thing about me.

My knee. I have chondromalacia patella in my right knee (patella-femoral pain syndrome) and have been having awful pain lately. Going down stairs sucks. Going up doesn’t feel good either, but isn’t as bad as going down. I fell on my knee last week, and I am sure that is what has aggravated it, but OW. My back is hurting again, too. It has only been a month since I had my last epidural steroid injection.

My head is just not in this right now.

I’d like to say, “HELP!”, only I’m not really sure what it is that I need right now. To clear my head? Yes. Smiles and laughs? Yes. A kick in the ass? Probably. My husband to go back to work? YES.

Well, technically it isn’t a WEEK, but whatevs.

Goals for getting Down & Dirty in 30

We’ve begun a new challenge around Shrinking Jeans and it’s fast-paced and nitty-gritty! There are quite a few things I want to accomplish this 30 days.

1. Attend muscle work twice a week all month. After today. I was totally flu-ish and had a migraine all night and morning today, which completely devastated me as I had set my alarm to get to class and everything. So I guess my goal now would be to make the remaining classes?

2. Lose weight. Duh. I need to focus on tracking, tracking, and tracking.

3. Cut down on the candy. I think I have a sugar addiction happening here.

4. RUN! My running (slogging, wogging, ralking, whatever you may call it) has been extremely scarce since my 1/2 marathon. Yes, that was in early June.

5. Beat this depression. <——–This may be the hardest yet. My husband lost his job a month ago (deja-vu from last year) and we haven’t had time to save up since we drained all our assets last year! On top of that, it doesn’t really enhance a marriage to have all this added stress. Sigh.

6. Water, water, everywhere! I need to drink more water. Period.

What are your goals for the upcoming month? Can you help keep my ass in check? K, thanks.

I kind of wanted to just skip this all together… but here goes:

Keep in mind that I weighed in after lunch and way later than usual.

And that it’s the week I am always up.

Excuses? Yeah, I have many.

But mostly I have just been eating like crap the last month or so!

I can’t wait for the new challenge in a few days.

P.S. I’m up 3 pounds. Eek.

True Confessions of Melissa

I am finally home! Seems like I have been out-of-town the whole month of July! Wait, I have been gone the whole month of July!!

I visited Christy in Texas last week.

I enjoyed  a few tasty cheeseburgers.

And some cheese fries.

And beers.

Side confession: My son and I tried Lima beans (plain, I’m sure I’ve had them IN other dishes) and we liked them. How does one prepare Lima beans?

I went to muscle work yesterday and it totally kicked my ass.

The Down and Dirty Challenge is starting is on Sunday and  I have huge expectations for it. I mean, 30 days? Really? Piece of cake. (Are you convinced?)

Post-Train-Wreck-Weigh-In

So, you probably read my confessions, here, even though I told you not to. It was ugly, oh-so ugly.

I am down 0.4 lbs this week and I will TAKE IT! Woot!

I guess I continue my history of losing while vacationing? So weird!

The kids and I leave tomorrow to go see Christy in Texas, so hopefully next week I will show another loss!

I made it to muscle work this morning and it felt damn good!

I plan to try and get some early morning run/walks in while I am visiting my skank-ass friend. ;)
